There are currently no open positions at BMC for AmeriCorps VISTA or State. However, we hope to welcome 14 VISTA and 28 State service members in summer 2025. Please complete the linked forms to be in consideration when recruitment begins in spring 2025.
History of AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps was established in 1993 as part of the National and Community Service Trust Act, signed into law by President Bill Clinton. The program was designed to engage Americans in intensive service to meet the country’s critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.
AmeriCorps was created as an umbrella organization for several existing programs, including VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), which was founded in 1965 as a national service program focused on alleviating poverty. AmeriCorps also includes the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) and State and National programs that partner with nonprofit organizations across the country.
Since its inception, AmeriCorps has enabled millions of Americans to serve their communities, earn educational awards, and build the skills necessary for future leadership roles. Through service, AmeriCorps members contribute to strengthening communities and addressing some of the nation's most pressing challenges.

Role of a VISTA Leader
The AmeriCorps VISTA Leader plays an integral part in creating sustainable resources and support systems for the annual cohort of VISTA Members. Leaders collaborate with the AmeriCorps Intermediary Program Coordinator to establish and evaluate an orientation for each cohort of members. They support quarterly workshops and the annual Intermediary Conference to create a more dynamic experience for members and host sites.
Eligibility Requirements
The AmeriCorps VISTA Leaders Program is open to members who have completed at least one year of full-time service with AmeriCorps (VISTA, NCCC, State and National, or Senior Corps) or Peace Corps. Leaders work to expand and build capacity of individual members, guiding at least six members through their year of service.

Scope of Work
AmeriCorps VISTA servicemembers are primarily focused on indirect service work to strengthen and evaluate internal systems for anti-poverty initiatives. Servicemembers serve in roles that focus on building organizational, administrative, and financial capacity within nonprofit organizations and public agencies. Therefore, members are expected to have limited interactions with patients, unless minimal direct service is necessary to carry out the objective of a service-year project or gain a broader understanding of the host site.
Possible duties of VISTA members may include (but are not limited to):
- Building sustainable relationships with community organizations and partners
- Evaluating clinical systems and implementing interventions to improve long-term efficiency
- Fundraising or grantwriting
- Recruiting community volunteers
- Writing and researching curricula for courses and workshops
Time Commitment
Full time, 40 hours/week. Members will serve approximately 1700 hours by the end of their service year.

Join AmeriCorps State
Scope of Work
AmeriCorps State servicemembers are primarily focused on direct service work to produce immediate outcomes for the community. At Boston Medical Center, AmeriCorps State members have embedded in various clinic locations (Family Medicine, Primary Care, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, or the EASE and Grow Clinics within Pediatrics) to conduct needs assessments with patients and offer assistance applying for various welfare programs such as PT-1, WIC, the StreetCred economic bundle, and various other resources.
Member activities have two main objectives:
- Conduct needs assessments with patients;
- Based on the results of those assessments, help patients to apply or register for government and community support programs that address their social determinants of health.
Time Commitment
Reduced (half-time, 16 hours/week). Members must serve a minimum of 675 hours during a maximum of 12 months.

Recruitment (Hiring) Process
The interview process can take two weeks to one month, depending on staff availability.
- Complete the internal (BMC) application form (linked below);
- First-round interview with BMC AmeriCorps Intermediary Program Coordinator;
- Complete and submit the AmeriCorps application, with two (2) references attached;
- Second-round interview with BMC program staff;
- Some programs will require a third-round interview;
- Review and accept offer (in AmeriCorps Portal);
- Begin the onboarding process.
