Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas that regulates glucose (sugar) in the blood. Insulin resistance occurs when the body's cells don't react normally to insulin, resulting in high blood sugar and often, type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance commonly exists with obesity; other risk factors include poor diet and not getting enough exercise.
