The pancreas is a gland in the abdomen that makes enzymes that aid in digestion and hormones that help process sugar (glucose). When the enzymes are activated inside the pancreas instead of in the intestines, inflammation occurs called pancreatitis. Cases range from mild (no treatment necessary) to severe (pancreas is damaged and complications occur). Symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, and causes include gal stones and blockages. Treatment usually means hospitalization, pain management and fasting for several days.
