Alysse G. Wurcel, MD, MS is a nationally recognized clinician investigator with over 20 years of expertise in infectious diseases and experience working with people with HIV, people who are incarcerated, and people who use drugs. She joined the faculty of Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine in October 2024 as an Associate Professor and clinician investigator in ... the Section of General Internal Medicine. Additionally, she provides patient care at Boston Medical Center’s Section of Infectious Diseases. She provides patient care in the Section of Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Wurcel received her MD from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2008 and completed residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. After completing a fellowship in Infectious Diseases (ID), she graduated with a master's degree in clinical and transitional science from Tufts University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in 2014.
Dr. Wurcel's research portfolio is characterized by a commitment to health equity, development of systems-based strategies to improve healthcare, and engagement of a broad array of stakeholders. She is Multiple Principal Investigator on two National Institutes of Health R-level grants: a research project to improve equitable access to penicillin allergy de-labeling and an exploratory/development grant to improve systems of infectious diseases care in Suffolk County jails. She has published over 115 peer-reviewed manuscripts advancing the science of health services research.
Over the past decade, Dr. Wurcel has delivered clinical care as an ID physician across various institutions, including Tufts Medical Center, Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, Beverly Hospital, and several Massachusetts county jails. In 2020, Dr. Wurcel was chosen as the COVID-19 Liaison to the Massachusetts Sheriffs' Association. She plans to continue this work as the Infectious Diseases Liaison and is currently developing a pandemic preparedness plan for the jails, which will serve as a scaffold that other jails and prisons can use to develop institutional plans. In addition, she serves as Chair of the Academic Consortium for Criminal Justice Health, the largest research and advocacy organization in the US that focuses on health equity and criminal-legal impacted people.
